1989 Company was established on June 6, 1989 in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, it provided handbag processing for the Hong Kong firms after being the transferee of the Yong Yuan Handbag Factory in Shawan, Shenzhen. On October 25, 1989, the company has designed the first mobile phone case. On October 6, 1990, it has begun to launch mass production of leather phone case. At first, it was for the brick-sized "Motorola M8900", then the kettle-sized "Motorola M8800". It is interesting to note that "Kettle" was wildly used in Hong Kong before the word "Mobile phone" appeared. But mobile phone has not been introduced to China at that time, of course. So even a general beeper can be luxury for it costed RMB 6,000 which was equaled to a year's salary of an average staff.

According to the recorded history, 1989 Co. is the world's first professional manufacturer of mobile phone case.

On March 6, 1993, Yong Yuan Handbag Factory moved to Jieyang, Guangdong Province. It built its own factory site and founded Jiedong Rong Li Leather Company. The company expanded its production on a large scale by not only exporting the phone case, but also established its own brand "Leader" for domestic sales. The company was the designated supplier of "Motorola", "Nokia", "Ericsson" and "Siemens" of the time. Those mobile phone cases have been sold world wild going along with the mobile phones of the four brands. The annual production was at a peak when it came out to be 70 million.
