Springs headquarters are located in fort mill, sc, which is part of the charlotte, nc metropolitan area. Founded in 1887 on a site that is now a multi-acre park complete with walking trail located next to the headquarters, springs became a publicly traded company in 1966 (nyse: Smi). Net sales in 2000 were $2.3 billion. On september 5,2001, shareholders approved a proposal to take the company private to support a strategy to grow the business through acquisitions and make other investments that are in the long-term best interests of the organization.

Springs continues to be lead by crandall bowles, who was named chairman and CEO in 1995. She is the fifth generation of the founding family to lead the company.
