WATERMAN INDUSTRIES PVT. LTD. Waterman Industries Pvt. Ltd. Is celebrating 36th years. Established in 1973 as partnership firm, became private limited company in 1976. The company has consistent growth since its inception and surprisingly, when other pump companies are on the verge of closing in this difficult period. Waterman is going ahead on the performance curve and recorded growth rate of 37% compared to the last year. Mr. Bharat Patel, Managing Director alone can not claim credit for this achievement, every employee of the company has sense of belonging to the organization and works with full dedication. The most remarkable feature of the company is that in spite of being a private sector company, all the dealings are transparent, when even bigger companies feel shy to disclose their production and sales figures, this company is displaying these figures daily on the notice board at the entrance of the factory premises, any one including competitor can go and collect the details. Comparison with the same day and month of the last year is also displayed. Company has adopted Kaizen & Kan-ban system of management, he got inspired to adopt novel methods in the company when he visited friend’s factory in Belgaum, few years back. ‘Kaizen’ evolved as a management system in Japan, is a robust and well thought-put system based on the psychology of the human mind. Mr. Patel has encouraged his employees as per Kaizen to carry-out the changes in the work place at zero cost. Workers with approval of Managing Director are making the changes in the work table, lathe machines or anywhere which can improve efficiency, employees are appreciated and rewarded for it. They themselves explain to the visitor about the improvement. Supply of raw material/components is streamlined with adoption of two-bin system; workers are so familiar with it that no production supervisor or purchase manager is required. There is a fixed quantity in each tray at the production level, when it is empty, then kept at a particular place, there is a approved supplier for any material, no supplier is come for supply the material. Material is collected by companies vehicles. Whatever material is collected by vehicle it becomes the order, supplier has to replenish the material. No purchase order is issued. No supplier has to come for collection of payment it is send by courier. Payment is made as per agreement. This system has helped in reducing the inventory level and no time loss due to shortage of the material. Today company is having turnover of Rs. 22 crore annually. With 6 Sales Depot and 400 dealers all over the country. 18, 000 pumps of all models are manufactured, about 50% sale is direct, and few leading companies are also marketing these pumps in their own brand name. 3” 4” 5” 6” 7” 8” & 10” dia submersible pumps up to 120 H.P., 1Ø & 3Ø open well submersible pumps up to 50 H.P. (horizontal & vertical), 1Ø & 3Ø centrifugal mono block up to 30 H.P. Jet centrifugal pump are in the range of manufacturing, company is maintaining its rigid marketing policy, prices, discount structure and payment terms same for all the dealers. However additional cash discount, turn over discount and quantity discount is given. Everyday morning sharp at 8-30 A.m there is a prayer conducted by all the employees togather including Managing Director. every first day of the month is fix as a cleaning day so no waiting for Diwali, factory premises is always shining. Tea/coffee vending machine is placed, during fixed time any one can make use of it. Bisleri Drinking water provided to all the employees. Managing Director does not call staff inside the cabin and delivers the paper himself on the particular table. Un-necessary old papers or files are not kept and it is difficult to find any paper more than a year old in the office. Any particular person or group of manufacturing unit, is welcomed to visit the factory on 2nd Monday of every month with prior appointment. According to Mr. Patel, such novel methods have increased the productivity by 25% and helped him to reduce the overheads. Salary and wages are paid more than minimum wage declared by government. Government of Andhrapradesh in Panchayatraj, South Central Railway, and many government and semi government departments. • Pumps are exports to various countries.
