NEW SOUTH WALES SUGAR MILLING COOPERATIVE LTD

The sugar industry has been a part of life in northern New South Wales, Australia for more than one hundred years. The industry is a significant contributor to the economy of the area and provides the community with employment opportunities, growth and prosperity.The NSW Sugar Milling Co-operative Ltd was formed when cane growers purchased the three NSW sugar mills from CSR in 1978. The mills are located at Condong on the Tweed River, Broadwater on the Richmond River and Harwood on the Clarence River. The Co-operative also operates a sugar refinery which is located alongside the Harwood Mill. This is owned by a joint venture company, Manildra Harwood Sugars (MHS), in which the Co-operative is a 50% partner with Manildra Flours. The sugar refinery was officially opened on 28 September 1989 and since then has produced over five million tonnes of refined sugar and related products. IIn 2012 MHS was the first refiner in the world to be awarded Bonsucro certification, the global metric standard for sustainable sugar production which aims to improve the social, environmental and economic sustainability of sugarcane production. To add to this, MHS is now the only 100% Australian owned refinery, something that we are very proud of.
